RYA First Aid Course
This one day course covers emergency resuscitation and basic First Aid with an emphasis on doing it afloat. It is the minimum First Aid qualification required by RYA Dinghy, Powerboat and Windsurf Instructors and Racing Coaches, and commercial Skippers.
The RYA First Aid Course is unique in First Aid terms, as it is aimed at water sports enthusiasts and takes a realistic look at the levels of First Aid that can be performed in a yacht, powerboat or dinghy and is taught by instructors who have experience of operating these sorts of environments where the ambulance is not just ten minutes away.
This principles learnt on this course aren’t of course just limited to life afloat, they can be applied in any sort of emergency situation whether it’s at home, work or on holiday with the family.
Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course
This course is essential (legally required) for anybody wanting to operate a marine vhf radio on board any vessel. The course covers the use of marine radios including GMDSS, routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures as well as Digital Selective Calling (DSC), Navtex, EPIRBs and SARTs.
Ideal for those new to using vhf radio’s or those with an old vhf licence who wish to use modern radios with DSC capabilities and need to upgrade their qualification.
Although a classroom based course the main part of the course is taught using specially adapted modern vhf radio’s to practice real life situations.
There is a £30 administration fee payable to the RYA at the end of the course to cover the cost of certification.
RYA Basic Navigation and Safety Course
This course gives a basic introduction to navigation and safety for anyone new to boating: sailors, powerboaters, sea anglers, divers and boat masters. Also useful for experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers
By the end of the course you will have a basic awareness and understanding of navigation and safety, having learnt about charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness, basic navigation and pilotage, rules of the road, electronic navigation, anchoring, weather forecasts, passage planning
RYA Day Skipper Course
This course gives a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. It is invaluable for learning how to start making decisions on board a yacht or powerboat and also help understand what is going on when others take charge. The course covers basic seamanship and an introduction to navigation and meteorology. A basic knowledge of lights, weather and IRPCS is also included.
By the end of the course you should have sufficient knowledge to navigate a yacht or powerboat around familiar waters by day and night.
Students will need to have plotting instruments in order to complete the course. Again these can be purchased at the start of the course.
RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster
This follows on from the day skipper course and builds on many of the subjects covered on that course but in a lot more depth while also introducing many other new and equally important subjects. This course is aimed those wishing to go onto compete the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster courses and exams as well as the recreational sailor wishing to widen their knowledge base. By the end of the course you should be equipped with the knowledge to navigate yacht or motor cruise in unfamiliar coastal and offshore waters during the day and at night.
Students will need to have plotting instruments in order to complete the course. Again these can be purchased at the start of the course.
Club Race Officer Courses
The Club will be running at least 4 Club Race Officer Courses during the 2011 year. The aim of these is to enable people with some existing knowledge of Sail racing and its administration to become Race Officers for Club racing (With a little practice).
The Club is very keen to increase the number of available Race Officers (As well as Safety boat skippers), and as such will be offering generous incentives to new and existing members to enrol on these courses.
The Club Race Officer course will cover all of the ground which the standard RYA course covers, with the exception of those elements not applicable at Spinnaker (Tides, Currents, Use of GPS and Compass bearings etc, which are redundant), and will instead substitute elements which are relevant locally, such as the whereabouts and contents of the Race Officers box, Our own Committee boat info, classes, types of start and races employed at the club, Race results production and Course setting guidance etc).
Once you have satisfactorily completed the course you will be given an ARO duty asap afterwards, at which you will be expected to take the lead role (i.e. acting RO), before being let loose on your own, quite soon afterwards (This will mean you will have at least 2 duties in fairly quick succession, in return for having received the heavily subsidised training).
If you would like more information about any of the courses or are looking for something slightly different please contact the Club on 01425 483692 or email theoffice@spinnakerclub.co.uk.
