Wednesday Evening Racing New Instructions Help Sheet

The schedule has undergone some changes so please expect a small change to your start time.

Start times

There are grades for you to choose from.

A*    Someone who has had a top 10 place at National or National Inland

        Championships.

A      11th to Midway in National or National Inland Championships.

B      Lower half of Nationals or Inlands or Good Club Standard.

C      Weaker Club Racer.

D      Improvers.  Someone who has had two seasons racing experience.

E      Beginners/Learners.

If possible decide from the above which start time fits your ability best and tell Tiggy who will enter it on the start time list. If in doubt please ask Tiggy for help.

Anyone may start later than their allotted time but you may not start earlier and you may be awarded a 50 point penalty if you do.

Bonus System

Each Series of 10 races has 4 races to count.  To encourage more of you to take part more often there will be a bonus system.

Anyone completing 5,6,7 or 8 races in one series will receive a 2 point bonus for each of those races.  ie 2,4,6, or 8 points may be removed from your total points score at the end of the series depending on how many races you have sailed. (for anyone new to the system, the lower the points score the better and the higher your place in the fleet will be at the end).

Are you doing too Well?

Anyone who has had a first or second in any race in the series except race 10 MUST start one minute later at your next start. Thereafter you may revert back to your original start time. (unless of course you have achieved another first or second in which case you must move back a further minute).

If you win the cup CONGRATULATIONS but you must now move to a better grade i.e. start later for the next series.

Tie Break for the Cup

Firstly bonuses will be excluded. If still a tie, who beat whom more often in all the races of the series. If still a tie, who beat whom in the last race they sailed in against each other. If still a tie by the the best discarded race.

Finishing

No Change,  PLEASE sign off with the boat in front and the one behind as clearly identified as possible.  If you forget and go home ring Tiggy on 01425472612.  Your place but more importantly, other people’s places depend on everyone signing off correctly.  Your finishing position is at the First sound signal you hear, keep sailing there will be a second sound signal at which point you head for home.

Bumps, Collisions and Cross Words

Wednesday Night is for an enjoyable evening and an introduction to racing for novice sailors.

This does not mean that rules can be ignored or unreasonably exploited or that protests may not be required.

We expect a high level of understanding, patience and good temper from all. Experienced sailors need to be mindful of the inexperience of others.  The inexperienced need to ask for help with the rules either on the water (ask the boat nearest to you when things look difficult and decide who is going to do what before the crisis is upon you,) or off the water find out in the bar what went on and why.

Everyone can get things wrong, do not go home fuming, sort it out at the club before you leave.  Ask an experienced helm what they think or ask one of the clubs’ nominated rules advisors for help.

If an accident happens (and of course they do occasionally) and any boat or person damage is concerned it is particularly important to make sure either both parties are happy to agree what happened or that if there is doubt then a protest is gone through. This may have implications for the insurance company.

If everyone behaves well with patience and good humour there are very few problems that cannot be easily sorted out.  Experienced sailors need to pass on their expertise to beginners and beginners need to be prepared to listen and learn from others with more knowledge than themselves.  Make sure you meet in the bar afterwards and keep Paul happy by eating many dinners.

As always Tiggy retains the right to change peoples’ start times if she feels it is necessary.
