April 11th Pursuit and Sprint Day

Sunday 11 April saw a fleet of 30 boats enjoying the Spring conditions. And we had it all. Bright sun, threatening cloud and even some snow!. Winds were generally light. It was not easy for the race crew who saw the wind swing from a North Easterly to a more typical South Westerly and then back again - all whilst the fleet was due a start.

The first race saw the popular pursuit race with its format of staggered start times based on boat type and sailor grade. This was a classic where the earlier starters got away pursued by the chasing pack including many solos, lasers. Neil Marshall sailing the new family solo maintained his early lead pursued by Gabby in the Radial, Dave in the Solo and then Robert Marshall first time in a long time single handed in the Firefly.

The second part of the day was Spinnaker's first Sunday Sprint series. Here 3 nominal 20 minute 'back to back' races took place. Another highly diverse fleet including Lightning, Fireball, Comet, Vision filled the start line. 9 Lasers, 7 solos. This series used the Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) format. The Fireflys relished the lightish conditions and a tussle between Tom Clay and Ed Morris ensued at the front. Although Tom led Ed after 2 laps in Race 3 Ed came through to take the series. Final results Ed, Tom, Ian (Laser) and Jonathan (Aero 7).

Thanks to Race crew Roy, Keith, Tim and Paul. The format repats Sunday 18th April.
