Rock Up and Race

12th March, 10:30 - 12:30

Rock Up and Race is a fun, simple racing session using club boats where the emphasis is fun and enjoyment. Racing is run in club owned RS Zests, with an instructor enabling and supporting the racing.

The format for the session is:

  • 1.Briefing ashore (about 10 minutes)
  • 2.1 hour of fun racing around a simple course
  • 3.Après sailing ashore in the clubhouse

How It Works:

Each race will be a single lap around either a triangle or windward/leeward course. We will do as many races as we can in one hour.

Rules Whilst Racing:

A basic set of rules will be used consisting of:

  • Port tack will give way to Starboard tack
  • Windward boat will give way to leeward boat
  • Within 3 boat lengths of a mark the inside boat must be given space to get around the mark (simplified Rule 18 Room at the mark).

Starting:

There will be a 3-minute countdown to the start provided by the automatic timer in the safetyboat. There will be no flags or other visual signals, but the instructor running racing will give verbal reminders/tips in addition to the hoots.

Whilst Racing:

The instructor will provide hints and tips to support everyone in their sailing. The aim is that the session is enjoyable, and allows everyone to try racing. The safety of everyone is our first priority and so this will be our first consideration at all times.

Finishing:

To finish the race sail through the line going upwind. After finishing wait to the side of the line so its easy for the boats behind to finish.

As soon as everyone has finished one race the start sequence for the next race will begin.
