Spinnaker Sailing Club on Tour!
Both last week and this week have seen our members out competing at different venues around the country! Last week 14 of our sailors took part in Parkstone Youth Week (alongside 349 other youth sailors) and Ed Morris, Ellie Assinder and one of our instructors Robbie Hudson were sailing at the Firefly National Championships at Restronguet!
Youth Week saw plenty of fun ashore as well as great sailing across all 6 days (with massively improved weather compared to last year). Some of the particular highlights were Bella, Billy, Mae, Will and Emily receiving "buffs" for their performance in individual races, the terrifying sight of our Operations Manager James being roped into helping cook Tuesday night's BBQ and our now traditional trip to Pizza Express followed by Splashdown Water Park! All of our sailors were great representatives of the Club showing fantastic sportsmanship as well as proving what great sailors we have developed over the years.
This week Emily and Lewis are competing in the Topper National Championships at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, good luck both of you!
Upcoming Training Opportunities
While our summer holiday youth courses are now almost fully booked we have plenty of spaces available for our planned activities in September!
Spinnaker Youth Training returns for Block 3 of 2024 on Sunday 8th September, we also have an RYA Safetyboat on 5th and 6th September for those looking to develop their skills and gain the ability to drive the safetyboats in support of club activity.
We have recently had several requests for some Introduction to Paddleboarding sessions, and we will be looking to run a couple of these in late August and September, we'll be sending out an email with the dates next week!
Wednesday Evening Club Racing
We have 4 more Wednesday evenings where the later sunset allows us 2 races (Handicap, followed by Personal Pursuit). Then as we head into September we have our 4 race Twilight Series with just one evening race a week which finishes on Wednesday 25th September.
Don't forget the Commodore's Cup and Alice Lisle Tankard Races on Wednesday 28th September will be followed by fish and chips! Look out for more details soon.
Race Duties
Thank you to everyone who has supported racing so far this year (or booked in to cover duties later this year). We have a number of gaps coming up, where we are still looking for volunteers. On Thursday this week duties will be allocated to cover our racing programme up until the end of October. If you have not volunteered for two duties yet please do so now, then you get to pick dates which work for you!
Investment in Club Kit
Our club equipment gets used heavily throughout the year. To ensure it stays in great condition, and available for all our members to use we have a programme of constant maintenance and improvement. The latest boats to get treated to a little bit of extra care are our Toppers. These boats are very popular with our SYT sailors and their sails have a hard life, so we've treated them to a full new set of sails. These will be numbered this week and put onto the boats ready for when SYT restarts in September!
