Our New First Aid Courses
We are very excited that we are now able to start running RYA First Aid courses! Our first course is on Tuesday 5th November. The course covers everything you would do on a normal first aid course, but with a boating twist, as well as looking at very relevant subjects such as drowning, cold shock, and how to get radio medical advice if you are offshore.
You can see more details and book on here.
Upcoming Open Meetings
Our next open meeting is our Topper Traveller on 19th October. Then as we head into November we have the Twisted Tube Random Pairs Team Racing and our Firefly Open Meeting on the first weekend in November! You can enter all of these now.
Our Firefly sailors especially would love to see some members who normally sail other boats to join them, and we have 12 Fireflys available to hire this year! We are running a Firefly Training Day on Saturday 26th October, a perfect warm up!
How To Stay In Touch
As well as our regular newsletters we have our Facebook and Instagram profiles to keep up to date with what is going on. We then also have a Whatsapp Community with several groups including one for each of our main dinghy classes, and the SYT Parents group so that everyone can stay in touch and get all the latest news.
Sailing Committee Changes
This winter three members of our Sailing Committee are standing down from their current responsibilities. Nick Robinson has been on the Sailing Committee in a variety of capacities over the last few years, most recently as Solo Captain and Sailing Secretary, meanwhile Ian Hickman was Laser Captain in 2014-2016, and last year stepped back into the role when Gareth departed as an interim replacement. Rod Small has been on the committee over the last two years as our Handicap Class Captain, and is stepping back to focus more on dinghy cruising rather than racing. We would like to thank all of them for their work over the last few years. We are therefore looking for new individuals to fill these roles.
The Sailing Committee normally meets on the first Monday of the month (not in January or August) via Microsoft Teams, with meetings lasting around an hour and a half. The Sailing Committee is where we plan all the fun things the Club does, and a wide range of views is always welcome. the Class Captains and Sailing Secretary have a few other "jobs" which take up very little time:
Class Captains - Liaise with relevant Class Association, plan annual Open Meetings, represent sailors of their class at the Sailing Committee. Currently we are looking for a Laser/ILCA Captain, Solo Captain and Handicap Captain.
For more information please speak to Tom Clay - Rear Commodore Sailing (rcs@spinnakerclub.co.uk) or James Oborne - Operations Manager (training@spinnakerclub.co.uk).
Some Sad News - Brenda Jackson
Club members of longer standing may remember Brenda and her husband Geoff who were very supportive members of the Club until they moved to France in the early two thousands. Brenda was for many years the Club's Administrator and a member of the formidable Wednesday Evening Race team. Sadly Brenda died earlier this year after a long illness. Geoff is holding a celebration of her life at Parkstone Yacht Club on 18th October from 14:30. Geoff would be keen to see anyone from Spinnaker who wishes to attend.
