Thank You!
A big thank you to the team who gave up their Saturday to help out around the Club! Through their hard work the Solo and Laser berth areas were strimmed, the race hut decking and exterior was cleaned, the picnic benches were levelled and dug in, and a large amount of rubbish collected.
The Club looks a lot neater and tidier thanks to their efforts, well done team!
Club Polo Shirts
Our new Club Polo Shirts have arrived! For those of you who ordered these they can be collected from the Club now. Please speak to either James or Neil when you come to pick them up.
If you didn't order one last time and would be interested in one in the future please let us know.
Social Sailing and Club Night
Our Thursday morning Social Sailing and Friday Club Nights are a great opportunity to get out on the water. During these times Club Boats are available to hire, we have a safety boat ready and a staff member on hand to provide assistance whether that is a few quick pointers with rigging, getting a boat up and down the slipway or providing safety cover.
Summer Training Courses
Through the Summer Holidays we have a huge range of RYA Training courses running. All of these can be signed up for on our website, and with the arrival of warm weather recently are now filling up fast!
Having listened to feedback over the last few months we have added an option to join our 5-day Youth RYA Stage 1 & 2 course for just Thursday and Friday to achieve RYA Youth Sailing Stage 2 if you have previously only completed your RYA Stage 1, such as through a school club or a 2-day course somewhere else.
If you have any requests regarding our Summer Programme please speak to James and we will see what we can do to help.
Club Racer Class Captain's Training Session - 8th July
On Saturday 8th July we will be running our next Class Captain's Race Training Session! This time it will be led by James our Chief Instructor and we will be looking at the strategy and tactics to help you win! There will be a mix of on-water sessions and shore side discussions alongside tea, coffee and cake!
This training is open to any sailor who takes part in Club Racing and is 18 or over. We are opening this training session up to double handed sailors as well!
Club Duties - A Message From The Commodore
The fundamental principle that our club is founded on is that it is a member's club. While some of us choose to step up and help run the club for the rest of the membership, it is in the end it is still a member's club. An important part of that is accepting that as part of the membership deal, you are asked to do a couple of duties each year. This is particularly important for our keen racers, as their racing can not take place without them doing a race duty for the race series they are involved in. They get average points for the series, so there is no penalty. I would recommend doing a duty as an inexperienced racer as you will learn a lot watching others race. The assistant roles are an excellent way to learn about race management.
An aspect of this duty system, is the option of a "buyout" where club members are given this option to fund the professionals at the club filling that duty at the clubs cost. I know from my involvement in other clubs, that this can be a slippery slope towards higher subscriptions, and much higher buyout costs, when the professionals are used to replace the non attendance/signing up for club members.
Our Club Website based "Sailing Club Manager" system allows all members to choose the optimal dates for their duties, and I don't think is complicated to use I mean I can use it, so there is hope for you all! It is much better all round to have each of you choose your optimal dates, rather than the club doing that for you.
So please, have a look and see when suits you to do a duty, and help everyone to enjoy our club.
