Local Schools Sailing
It was fantastic last week to welcome Year 5 from Poulner Junior School to the lake for dinghy sailing tasters. All the children did fantastically well, in some breezy conditions. Amongst the children were a number of our regular Optimist sailors who kindly helped our instructor team out by sailing with some of the more nervous children.
We are working with Poulner Junior School over the next month to give every child in the school the opportunity to try dinghy sailing, that's over 250 children!
It is great to see our local school so keen to give their students the opportunity to try adventurous outdoor activities, and we cannot wait to see Year 4 this week!
Rules Talk Tomorrow!
Recently there have been a few questions asked by members to our resident team of umpires Tom, Neil and James. After racing this Wednesday James has kindly agreed to open the club bar and answer any questions members may have! Following several recent questions James will be talking about Rule 18 - what mark room is, when we are entitled to mark room and what we are not entitled to do! James will also be happy to answer any other questions!
Regional Junior Championships 2023!
This year the British Youth Sailing Regional Junior Championships for the RYA South Region are being held at Oxford Sailing Club on 17th/18th June!
This is a fantastic event, which sailors from Spinnaker have attended many times over the years. A number of our families have already entered their children into the event, and booked into a local campsite for a weekend that is fun for parents and children. As usual social meals will be organised on the SYT Whatsapp Group beforehand (currently the plan is pizza on Friday night and a pub meal on Saturday night). We strongly encourage all our junior sailors to take part in this event, as there is a group for everyone.
Full details of the event, and the entry form, can be seen here.
There are three different groups sailors can enter. James, Emma, Keith and Nick are more than happy to advise our youth sailors about which group is most suitable for them. As a general guide:
- Championship - For sailors who have taken part in JETS, BYS Regional Training Groups, or are competing in national level events such as the Topper National Series, this racing is for those wanting to push themselves at the top level in their boats
- Regatta - This is the group we would recommend for most of our current SYT Improver Racing sailors, racing is competitive, and sailors have a good grasp of the rules.
- Rookie - For sailors in SYT Begin to Race or Improvers we would recommend this group which is all about experiencing sailing somewhere new and having fun.
Solo & Byte Open - Saturday 13th May
Saturday 13th May sees our annual Solo Open Meeting, which this year is also open to Byte sailors!
We are looking forward to a great day of racing for two of our most popular classes. Full details including the Notice of Race and Entry Form can be seen here.
Please note due to this event there will be access to the lake for recreational activity during racing.
Save The Date - Fish and Chips!
Our next Fish and Chips Night will be Wednesday 10th May. Racing will finish at 8pm, and food will be collected for 8.30. As usual food will need to be pre-ordered (look out for a link to book on Monday 8th May), and the bar will be open from 8pm.
