Laser/ILCA and Byte Class Open

Warm spring conditions greeted the fleet of over 20 boats for Spinnaker's annual Laser Open meeting and our first Byte Class Open meeting.

A Northerly wind of 6-8 knots was present for the 1030 start and stayed constant through the whole event, albeit with a little pause during the lunch interval. This direction allows great use of the whole lake with two long beats and a run.

In the standard Laser /ILCA 7 class local fleet captain, Keith made his mark on the series skillfully picking the key shifts and getting to the pressure areas first. He secured three wins. In Race 2, Ian Hickman came from 4th position, finding the extra wind off the clubhouse shore. Peter May completed the local podium 1/2/3.

Spinnaker welcome the local and visiting Byte fleet and the seven boats fought hard over 45 minute races. The Glen family took all four 1sts. In Race 3 Kirsten skillfully saw the gap at the last mark whilst visitor Richard and Duncan fought for position into and after the mark. Richard's consistency earned him four seconds.

The ILCA 6/ Laser Radials had good competition with 3 different race winners in 4 races. Xavier and Oliver take the 1 and 2 with Jasmine also on the podium including a fine race 3 win.

In the Laser 4.7 it was notable that Frances maintained close contact with the Laser Radial fleet throughout the day.

For the race break, the McQuillin family laid on fine tea including plain and cheese scones (extra cheese too).

Overall this was an event characterised by fair and fun sailing, helped by the local Solo fleet sailors providing race officials and safety boat cover. Thanks to the Club staff too and commodore Hywel for award of the trophies, glassware and wine.
