Post-Lockdown Training Programme
Published 07:21 on 24 Apr 2020
I am sure many of you are as keen as I am to get back on the water as soon as possible. To enable as much sailing as possible the Club Boats have been prepared for use, with the below dinghies available as soon as the Club reopens:
- Optimists
- Toppers
- Qubas
- Fevas
- Visions
To enable social distancing and minimise the risk to everyone a modified training programme has been put together. This will run each week until we are at a more normal point where the "traditional" programme can be reinstated. The Sailing Committee have great plans for the regular Club racing, and as we approach the end of Lockdown they will release their plan as it is adjusted to the time available.
The overarching principals of the plan are:
1.Pay as You Go, all sessions will be booked as individual sessions to give flexibility
2.Reduce the total number of people on site at any one point
3.Provide a way for those who can already sail to get afloat, with support where required
The programme includes a brand new activity for Spinnaker Sailing Club Stand Up Paddleboarding. This relatively new watersport is a great way to get afloat when there is no wind, and is great all round exercise. The new Stand Up Paddleboards will be available after lockdown.
The programme is outlined below and this will start on the first Monday after the Lockdown is ended. Should we be allowed out the weekend before on the Saturday and Sunday James, the Chief Instructor, will be on site to provide any guidance or support for those that would like some, and man the safety boat should anyone wish to go for a warm up sail all sailors welcome!

A brief outline of each session is below, you will notice that at the moment we have not planned to offer any beginner training. This is because the teaching of beginners normally requires increased close contact, something we are trying to avoid. As the situation improves we aim to re-introduce beginner training as soon as possible.
SUP Taster an introduction to the use of Stand Up Paddleboards with an instructor, 8 spaces per session
SUP Club an opportunity to take out a Stand Up Paddle Board whilst a safety boat is available to provide that little bit of extra support
Adult Training an opportunity for adults who recently started their sailing journey to get afloat with an instructor and learn some new skills.
Social Sailing 2 hours of sailing where an instructor will be in the safety boat to provide hints, tips, and safety cover afloat. Open to all.
SYT Improver Groups Open to any youth sailor with Stage 2 or higher.
SYT Race Groups Open to any youth sailor with Stage 4 or higher, with an emphasis on Racing.
If you have any questions please get in touch with James by either phoning the Club or emailing him - training@spinnakerclub.co.uk.
