Training Update - 20th July Onwards

Published 21:19 on 1 Jul 2020

A revised training plan to run from Monday 20th July 2020 to Friday October 30th 2020 has now been uploaded to the Club's website. All training activities except for future SYT blocks are now open for booking.

This revised training programme includes RYA training courses, Spinnaker Youth Training and a Race Camp for our Topper and Optimist sailors. Below are further details about each specific training activity. As with the training that has been run over the last few weeks we are still restricted in what we can offer due to the ongoing Covid pandemic. Should restrictions be eased further additional opportunities may be made available.

A set of joining instructions has been added to events on the calendar. Please read these carefully as some things have changed again recently with the latest easing of restrictions.

In addition to the training that has been published today there will be a 3rd SYT Block running in the Autumn. By request of the Laser Class we are also looking to reschedule the Laser Training Day which was cancelled earlier this year, more details will follow as we confirm the plans.

Private Tuition

Private tuition is available and can be booked directly with myself. The cost is £45 for the first hour, with subsequent hours at a cost of £25. We can offer training to any level, looking at any skill.

Spinnaker Youth Training Block 2

Bookings will open for Spinnaker Youth Training Block 2 on Monday 6th July. Spaces are still limited due to gathering restrictions so please book early to avoid disappointment. This block will run through July and August. This weekend the instructors will be able to discuss with parents which block they feel is most appropriate for individuals to book onto going forward.

This block of training will run over 6 weeks, with all 6 being booked in one go as SYT usually is, for the cost of £60 if using your own boat, or £120 if a club boat is being used. Please book via the Week 1 calendar event.

The groups on offer and timings are the same as the current SYT availability across Saturday and Sunday. What is different is that we have made 15 spaces available for Improver Racing on Sunday morning. Once bookings are finalised for Improver Racing myself, Adele and Sophie will divide those who have booked into 3 groups based around ability and boat sailed.

Youth racing will continue to run on Sundays at lunch time, and this is open to all young sailors, not just those in the SYT Race groups.

Spinnaker Youth Training Block 3

SYT Block 3 will run in September and October for 6 weeks, beginning on Sunday 13th September. This block of training will see SYT return to running solely on Sunday mornings.

The available groups will be released in August, along with when the bookings will open. We are hoping to add a new group, called Advanced Skills to this block which will focus on double handed boats and skills including rudderless sailing and the use of spinnakers!

RYA Training Courses

I am very pleased to announce we are in a position to resume some RYA Training as of Monday 20th July. Due to social distancing restrictions at this time we cannot offer the full spectrum of courses we would like to. Hopefully later in the year as the situation improves we can offer these courses, as I know there is interest in certificates such as RYA Youth Stage 4 etc. Courses are available for adults and children.

In the autumn we also hope to resume powerboat training, to enable more members to undertake safetyboat duties and support racing.

Topper and Optimist Race Camp

Many members have asked me over the last few weeks about the potential for an Optimist Race Camp this summer. We have scheduled a Race Week to include Toppers and Optimists this year. There are currently 10 spaces per class, although this may be adjusted depending upon interest. The week will consist of 4 days of training, with a mini regatta on the last day. I am sure this will be a very popular and fun week.

Ladies Sailing

Ladies Sailing will take a break over the Summer Holiday period, resuming for another run of 6 weeks in September/October. As with SYT this will be bookable as a block of 6.

Should anyone have any questions please get in touch with me. At the moment I am on the water for most of the week, but if you email I will get back to you as soon as possible.

James
