Team Racing Report - Friendly Saturday 16th October 2021

Saturday 16th October saw Spinnaker SC host its first Team Racing event of this academic year. Spinnaker's team of Neil and Natasha, Eddie and Emma, and Kirsten and Suzy, were joined by three Southampton University freshers teams, and a Winchester team for a friendly season opener, kindly organised by Sam Petty and James Oborne.
Racing was delayed due to an initial total absence of anything resembling the slightest breeze, albeit glorious autumnal sunshine! By 11:00 a gentle Force 3 had filled in from the southwest, prompting the teams to rig and launch their Fireflys.
With the start boat positioned just shy of mark 'F', a digital 'N' course(shown below) was laid, with the finish line off the start hut. With all five teams, umpires Tom and Alex, committee boat team of Freya and James, and finish guru Jamie, all ready to go the races commenced!
A schedule of 40 races were followed, ensuring that every team met at least twice, with racing continuing until early afternoon. Racing was close at times, with the Southampton teams getting to grips with their boat handling, and finishing the Day 1st and 2nd. The spinnaker team utilised their combined experience to finish in joint 3rd with the remaining Southampton team. Winchester showed real promise, with some excellent displays of speed from the youngest team by far.
Spinnaker is hosting a number of team racing events this season principally:
- Twisted Tube Random Pairs 6th November
- UK Team Racing(UKTRA) Championships 13th and 14th November
- Wessex Winter Warmer 29th and 30th January
UKTRA will feature some of the country's top Team racers and is well worth popping down to watch! Given the success of last weekend we're planning to get club team racing up and running, if anyone is keen to get involved please let us know!
