BUSA Team Racing Finals 2025

Published 21:11 on 10 Feb 2025
We are very excited to be hosting the British Universities Sailing Association Team Racing Championship Finals in 2025! This event will run across 3 days (8th, 9th and 10th April) and see 28 teams of 6 sailors from universities across the UK battle it out for the Championship Title!
This is the largest event we have run at Spinnaker Sailing Club since 2019, and is being organised by our club in conjunction with BUSA and our partners at Ksail. The event will see teams racing against each other, swopping in and out of 30 Firefly dinghies in matched sets of 6 as they race one another in short, fast paced, tactical races to work their way to the top of the "Swiss League" before the knock out stages. Helping run this event is a fantastic way to see this exciting racing close up with some of the best sailors in the UK competing, including at least one who is aiming for the next Olympics! We know these are long days for our volunteers and so we will be providing lunch, and refreshments throughout the day to the team.
We have a strong and experienced team leading this event with our Operations Manager James as Event Director, Keith Sammons (one of the leading team racing experts in the UK) as Principal Race Officer, and a strong umpire team of rules experts. However, we still have a number of roles across the 3 day event we are looking for volunteers to help with. There are opportunities to help for just part of a day, a whole day, or even all 3 days. Full training and support will be given for all the roles. Below is a brief explanation of the roles we are looking for help with:
Start Boat Crew - Helping start the races on our Start Boat "Greg," working as part of a team of 3
Finish Boat Crew - Helping record the finishes of races on "Tiggy", before relaying the results information ashore for processing, working as part of a team of 2
Changeover Pontoon - Helping ensure the right sailors get in the right boat at the right time ashore, working closely with Lead Instructor Abi
General Helper (Powerboat) - Helping by acting as a ferry boat running drinks, food, paperwork and equipment around between shore and the on-water race teams. You must have at least RYA Powerboat Level 2 for this role
General Helper (Ashore) - Helping in the galley keeping the rest of the team fed and hydrated, during busy periods helping with changeovers as well
All of these roles can be volunteered for via the Duty Roster. For more information about this event please speak to James (training@spinnakerclub.co.uk).
