SYT 2024

Over the winter many of our youth sailors have been taking part in class association training around the region, as this comes to an end in March Spinnaker Youth Training will be back for 2024 from Sunday 14th April!

The format will remain broadly the same for 2024 as it was in 2023, with some small tweaks to our Beginner group! The RYA Beginners group as it is now known will allow any sailor to work towards their RYA Stage 1 or 2 as appropriate, and will run during every block of 2024! Our SYT Improvers, Begin to Race and Improver Racing groups remain as in 2023, providing a group suitable for every level of sailor. Sailors can sail in their own boats, or hire a club one for a small extra charge (boats are included in the RYA Beginners group).

You can see more details, and book for Block 1 here!

RYA Dinghy Show

The RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show is back for 2024 at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre on 24th and 25th February. This is a great chance to see a huge range of equipment, meet the British Sailing Team, listen to talks from a variety of personalities, and for most of our children the most important part seems to be the annual competition for who can get the best freebies!

A number of the SYT families are planning on going on Saturday this year, and it is always a great day out. On the last couple of years our various classes have organised meetups at the show for a coffee and chat via Whatsapp.

You can see more information here.

March Work Party

We are holding our annual Spring Work Party on Saturday 2nd March. This is a day when we ask all members to give a few hours of their time to help us tidy up the club site after the winter and get it ready for the summer sailing season! We have a range of tasks we wish to complete ranging from weeding to hedge cutting to pressure washing to litter picking.

If you cannot make it on the day we will miss you, but understand many of us lead busy lives. On Monday 5th February we will be having a skip delivered to the club grounds and placed near the BBQs. If you cannot make it on 2nd March, but will be at the club in February could we please ask you take a few minutes to clear any rubbish from around your boat and put it in the skip. This way we avoid throwing away any spars/boat stands left under your boat by accident.

To show our appreciation to our members who help on this day we provide tea/coffee/squash and this year a pasty/sausage roll! Look out for more details about pre-ordering your lunch and timings soon.

Yodare Talk at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

Some of you may remember Ken Fowler (Yodare) gave a talk via Zoom to us during the Covid-19 lockdowns about his incredible challenge to sail an RS Aero from Lands End to John O'Groats. Since then he has sailed around 250 coastal islands surrounding Great Britain, including the Isle of Wight in his Aero to continue raising funds for charity.

On 8th February at 7.30pm he is giving a talk at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club about his adventures in aid of Oakhaven Hospice. Tickets are £5 per person with all proceeds going to the hospice. You can book your ticket by emailing jill.west@oakhavenhospice.co.uk

Club Socials

Over the past few years we have had some fantastic socials at Spinnaker Sailing Club including fish & chips nights, BBQs, pizza nights, trips to the fireworks and more. For 2024 we would love to see some more social events happening!

Our class captains organise some events for their classes, and our Main Committee would love to organise a quiz night! We are looking for some help to organise this, so if you are a Quiz Master (or know someone who is) and can help please do get in touch with Phil our Commodore by emailing commodore@spinnakerclub.co.uk.

If you would like to organise a social for members using the club's facilities including the bar and/or arranging food please speak to our Operations Manager James by emailing training@spinnakerclub.co.uk who can help get things organised.
