Regional Junior Championships 2024
Last weekend were the South/South West Regional Junior Championships at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Monty, Emily and Lewis raced representing Spinnaker in the Optimist, Topper 4.2 and Topper 5.3 fleets respectively, and all three did very well with frustrating winds on the Sunday. A special mention to Emily for claiming 9th and 1st girl in her fleet! Well done all of you.
Race Duties
Those of you who raced on Sunday may have noticed we had two staff members supporting racing (as Race Officer and Safety Boat Driver), and two volunteer members (including one who stepped in last minute due to no one else volunteering, bringing their 8 month old baby with them). Spinnaker Sailing Club has limited staff resources, and only a small budget to pay for racing to be supported by employees. Should we continue to have insufficient volunteers to run racing we may need to cancel some racing activities at short notice if we do not have sufficient volunteers to run the events safely.
Hot Weather
Well summer has definitely arrived for this week, with high temperatures hitting the low 30's! Please remember to take care in this heat including wearing appropriate clothing, staying hydrated and wearing plenty of sun cream! Don't forget every tap at the club provides drinkable water, please bring a reusable bottle with you to help stay hydrated. Please do not use the disposable coffee cups for drinking water both to reduce our environmental impact, but also because they do cost the club quite a lot!
New Litter Bins
Our new litter bins for the newly created picnic areas by the north car park and the race hut decking have arrived this week! Please continue to make sure all rubbish is placed in the bins to help keep the club looking great and look after our natural environment.
RYA Training Courses This Summer
Our RYA Training Courses for the summer holidays are filling up fast! We do still have a few spaces available so if you would like to take advantage of the training we offer please book soon to avoid disappointment. In particular we would like to our highlight our very fun RYA Youth Windsurfing Stage 1 & 2 course running 5th - 9th August.
Staffing Working/Using The Club In Their Own Time
We are very fortunate to have a staff team who not only work at Spinnaker Sailing Club, but also enjoy using the facilities in their own time as members. Their enjoyment of the facilities (including with their families) means that they are more engaged with the club, maintain their passion for the activities they support for the club, and keep their own sailing skills up!
When they are wearing their Spinnaker Sailing Club polo shirts they are on duty and available to help. If they are in their own clothes and enjoying their off duty time please respect this, and do not use this time to ask them routine questions about the club/things they should be doing when working.
